门罗的父亲是基金大亨，在父亲去世后 ，家族的大部分遗产都留给了母亲和她的哥哥。在接到一封神秘信件后 ，她来到一个森林深处的仓库 ，发现了被父亲囚禁30年的摩根(佩吉饰)，在照料摩根的过程中，她逐渐了解了遗产分配的原因。凯特·玛拉原本是该片女主角 ，但日程安排促使她换了角色。
