在Ragnar Lothbrok死后，本季故事将围绕Bjorn、无骨人Ivar、Harald Finehair国王、Lagertha和Ubbe五方的权力之争展开 。当本季开始时，无骨人Ivar宣布自己是「维京雄狮」的领袖并控制了约克城，而Lagertha则以女王的身份统治着卡特加特海峡 。Ragnar的儿子们以各自的方式策划为父亲报仇雪恨，但是Ivar在激烈的争执中谋杀了兄弟Sigurd ，引发一系列血腥的内战——很显然其他兄弟并不相信Ivar的解释。Bjorn追随命运来到地中海，还抵达了突尼斯（沙哈拉沙漠的边缘）。Rollo从地中海回到家乡，他已完全改变，但他和家人朋友的关系还是那样紧张 。Floki失去了妻子Helga，于是乘船在海上随波逐流，听凭上帝指引他的去向。
