北宋仁宗年间，汴河河畔有水怪出没 ，开封府受命后，第一时间派出带刀侍卫展昭追寻线索，而殿前司都虞侯邓车得知，不怀好意的将侄子邓六郎也插入了办案队伍 。几人推断出这所谓的怪兽应该是机关所制成 ，在邓六郎的介绍下，一行人去往了当今最有名的机关大师“胜鲁班”的居所——乾坤宫 ，并偶遇年轻女子——公输灵 。几人来到了地下鬼市 ，寻找制造机关傀儡的售卖商 ，并遇上了一个无脸人。打斗中公输灵认出无脸人是自己幼时叛出家门的亲生哥哥公输清 。机关兽应该也是公输清炼制的 。而他受到邓车指使 ，想要行刺皇上 。关键时刻公输灵为展昭挡下致命一击，看着家妹逝去的公输清幡然醒悟，指证了邓车的所有罪行……
