菩萨崖是河北某革命根据地的一个村子，现在这里成立了高级社，社里的老饲养员田老耕 ，要去北京探望离别了十年的儿子——三儿。三儿在北京当了副局长，并改名为田刚。乡亲们都赶来送行 ，田老耕在众人千嘱万嘱的欢笑声中 ，踏上了探亲之路。老耕到北京后，很不巧，儿子出差去了 ，两三天赶不回来 。他只好先见了儿媳赵玉书 ，儿媳看起来很贤慧 ，但对待老耕总是有些若即若离 ，好像有什么说不出来的苦衷似的。当田刚从工地上赶回来时，谁想没想到，田刚并不是三儿，却是个陌生人 。老耕责备自己找错了，可这并没有错 。原来田刚和三儿很早就在一个连队里，两个人是亲密的战友。土改时期，土匪袭击他们驻扎的乡村，三儿为了解救老百姓光荣地牺牲了。田刚忠实地按照三儿的嘱托，通过组织上的允许，一直奉养着田老耕。
