《落第秀才》是一部超级爆笑剧，剧中巧妙地融进了所有的喜剧元素。演员们在剧中个个都猴精猴精的，表演上及其爆笑 ，甚至是无厘头。 连“彩信”这样的现代专用词汇，也被编入戏中。 故事讲的是江南穷秀才李长文 ，连续八年科试不中，只好在江南苏州名店“大钱柜”打杂工 ，成了众人笑柄，且得了个“落第秀才”的美号。 这年举试李长文与不学无术 ，仗其父在朝为官，鱼肉乡里的学堂同学司马算一同参加科试。皇上发现臣子的奏章文理不通，怀疑科场出了问题，微服来到江南 。考试前夜司马算宴请考生 ，实为向考生卖题。 发榜了，司马算榜上有名，而李长文却又名落孙山。青梅竹马的未婚妻钱小小一怒之下愤然离去。 司马算为买下“大钱柜”酒楼，改成妓院，想方设法，百般刁难酒楼老板娘杜媚娘。为帮杜媚娘度过难关 ，在酒楼打工的李长文出谋划策 。围绕着酒楼归属，展开了一场争斗 。这场争斗引起了微服私访的当朝皇帝的注意，从而引出了酒楼里藏着的秘密。 在皇帝暗中相助下 ，李长文依靠智慧最后占胜了司马算 ，保住了酒楼 ，粉碎了司马算父亲等人的阴谋。
