二十年前异族入侵 ，中原武林发生了一场旷日持久的血战。最终只剩八人，从此“八大高手”成为整个中原武林的泰山北斗，江湖的和平持续了整整二十年。八大高手之一“巨灵战神”薛力士已归隐田园，却死在农田中 。紧接着，八大高手中的另一位魔教长老赵乘风也死在家中。六扇门奉命调查此案。而六扇门总捕头叶无忌也是八大高手之一。叶无忌的徒弟段小峰大胆推断这两人都是死在自己的成名绝技之下 ，江湖中出现了一位如当年的长孙氏一般能“以其人之道还治其人之身”的高手。年轻气盛的段小峰决定独自去往扬州查案，途中结识了赵乘风的义女王非烟，并与潇湘馆的伎官孙盈互生好感，八大高手相继遇害，其实孙盈就是“以其人之道还治其人之身”的神秘高手。
