1764年，贺拉斯·华尔浦尔出版了英国文学史上第一部哥特小说《奥特兰多城堡》。小说神秘莫测的魔幻色彩以及围绕伊莎贝拉情感发展的曲折剧情折服无数读者 。长久以来，该小说被认为是以意大利南部某座小镇为蓝本写就的，但是自幼热爱该小说的霍瑞斯·威博却始终未能在意大利当地找到符合书中描述的城堡 。偶然机会，他从友人寄来的明信片上找到线索，从而在捷克位于纳霍德附近的奥特汉妮城堡取得重大发现。 导演撷取书中重要章节和剧情 ，穿插霍瑞斯走访当地的照片和研究，向所有《奥特兰多城堡》的忠实书迷展现那座神秘城堡的真实面貌……
